Basic theory, operation and maintenance of lead-acid batteries. Some specifics covered include: the differences between a primary and secondary battery and those between a cell and battery; definition and purpose of electrodes and electrolyte; the basic mechanism by which chemical energy is converted to electrical energy; using a hydrometer to determine the state of a battery; the relationship between discharge rate and discharge capacity; and how to perform preventive maintenance.
Prerequisites - An Understanding of simple electrical diagrams an DC electricity. Ability to understand chemical symbols and simple reactions (Course Number 58)
